Vegas Approves 17 Prop Bets For the 2017 NFL Draft

The 2017 NFL Draft is scheduled for April 27 to April 29 in Philadelphia, and it marks the first year that Nevada sportsbooks will be accepting wagers on the draft.

The Nevada Gaming Control board made the decision to allow betting on this year’s draft less than a month after it was announced that the Oakland Raiders would be moving to Vegas. Gaming regulators saw that the untapped market could potentially draw in big numbers in terms of interest and dollar signs, and sportsbooks in the state also agree. Jay Kornegay, VP of Race and Sports at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook, had the following to say when asked by ESPN:

"This country loves football. They love betting football, so I can understand that there will be some interest in these new options."

Not All Books Are On Board… Yet.

We can start off by thanking William Hill U.S., the gambling operator that runs 108 licensed sportsbooks in Nevada, for pitching the proposal to the Gaming Control board. All Nevada gambling sites that offer sports betting have been approved to accept bets on the draft, but not all books have opted to start taking bets just yet. There are also some sportsbooks that have decided to only accept action on 10 or so of the bets approved by the board, such as William Hill. We know that the Wynn Las Vegas has already said that they will not be taking any action on #NFLDraft2017, but no matter who chooses to participate we can still bet on the draft at offshore sportsbooks like BetOnline.

What Types Of NFL Draft Bets Are There?

When determining the types of bets that Vegas sportsbooks can take, regulators made sure that they would not interfere with the integrity of the game in any way. In a statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, board chairman A.G. Burnett stated that “It has to be something that makes us comfortable from a regulatory standpoint. Most importantly, that the outcome of the event can’t be affected by a bet that is placed.”

That is why bettors will not be able to wager on player or team specific scenarios - such as the No. 1 overall pick or when Jamal Adams will be drafted - but there are still plenty of other proposition bets to have fun with. Books have already gotten a lot of action on what round the first placekicker will be taken in and number of SEC players selected in the first round.

You have to get bets in by COB on April 26th.
